people this is not a programming discussion about which language is the best coz there isnt a best language its objectively my comp dont ask me if i wasnt it to be a .bat programm...it just stays a wordpad(using that coz my comp doesnt seem to have notepad on it...)

Honestly java is extremely easy to learn regardless of how absolutely anal it is. I'm suing the brackeen package by david brackeen. I hate these retarded IDE's like netbeans, its pointless to have something like netbeans running even for someone doing advanced programming like me. I use JCreator and im doing 3D game programming in java. JCreator is great because u dont need to run anything via command prompt but you dont have to hold netbeans hand and walk it through the programs directories.

That is an emotional response and not worth following up on. You don't bother getting the facts. You're emotionally driven and not willing to check out what parts are bad and need improvement. Hollow zealot.

Anyone who says that the UNIX kernel programmers are "simpleton programmers" is stupid and not worth listening to. That means you. Let's leave it at that.
By: a1mint. on 20 Dec 08, 18:07:38
Java is object oriented. Out is a print stream that has the println method. out is owned by System. It all makes sense. But guess what? Java has static imports, like so: import static System; ... out.println(123); You might be surprised that when you go through some of the code, that a lot of the code is actually quite doh-headish, and would have been much better if it was nicely done up in OO. It seems everything you say is all emotional and gut feeling based, and not based on facts.
By: bogdanp9. on 20 Dec 08, 17:34:20
In my opinion java is much more complicated than other languages just for simple things like writing "hello world" or adding 2 numbers. On the other hand, where other languages get really really complicated, java gets more intuitive and easy. So for learning simple things i would go with C or Pascal ( that's what i did when i started ).I'm not very experienced, but that's how i see things.
By: fremlinskent. on 20 Dec 08, 15:13:03
Again YES it is fair. Printing out "hello world" uses a far more complex syntax in Java than numerous other languages. The UNIX and Linux programmers are simpleton programmers? You've just demonstrated that you are a dunce. There is no point arguing with a dunce so I won't go on.
By: a1mint. on 20 Dec 08, 00:31:45
Take for instance the IceWM Linux Window manager. Nicely coded in C++. Result: easy maintainable code. Reliable. Fast and concise. I've been coding for over 25 years with anything from assembler to C to C++ to Java and some other languages. You can choose to not believe me, but really, OO is a jewel for programming. There is *NO* comparison, not even by a long shot.
By: a1mint. on 20 Dec 08, 00:29:41
Again, no it is NOT fair. Read again: Normal real world applications do a lot more than just printing hello. What part of that don't you understand? The Unix / Linux / BSD kernels would be a lot better, and a ton of other stuff would be a *LOT* - and I mean a *LOT* better if these stubborn simpleton programmers would use C++ instead of C, and actually use classes and polymorphism. The most uber lamest argument is that "classes are slower because of the 'this' pointer". 100% B.S. argument.
By: fremlinskent. on 19 Dec 08, 20:34:05
Yes it is fair. If you want to print out "hello world", as in this example, the cleaner and easier to read syntax is Tcl (or quite a few other languages too). Take a UNIX(-type) kernel, e.g. FreeBSD. It's not object oriented, yet it is complex. So OO is not, as you suggest, crucial for complex systems. OO has its place, there is no doubt of that. Java is not a good language to learn as a first language. Hello world, the usual trivial example, just looks scary in Java.
By: a1mint. on 19 Dec 08, 18:57:16
No it is NOT fair. Normal real world applications do a lot more than just printing hello. Object oriented structure is absolutely crucial for systems with any complexity. Instead of just a script that just execute a few consecutive instructions, you need a way of defining objects with behaviors that you can later give jobs to. Objects hold their own local state for each instance. A lot of younger developers are completely missing out on the enormous progress the previous generation has made.
By: fremlinskent. on 19 Dec 08, 17:56:12
Hardly a newbie. But there is no way you can tell me that printing "hello world" is nicer and cleaner in Java than Tcl. Comparing the syntax of the two for such a simple task is fair.
By: a1mint. on 19 Dec 08, 16:36:34
You can't compare by looking at a small language. You must be a newbie. That's ok though, you have to start somewhere. Don't let me discourage you. Ok, Java is an object oriented language. It holds up in large systems. Code remains maintainable and works well in development teams with multiple developers. Java is also *fast* because the JVM has amazing compilation techniques at runtime. Don't believe any rhetoric that Java is bad. Java just simply rocks, trust me, I know. Coding for over 25yrs..
By: fremlinskent. on 19 Dec 08, 10:50:16
Try Tcl: puts "hello world" public static void man(String[] args} { Crap(); }
By: a1mint. on 18 Dec 08, 23:46:07
That's not cluttered at all! You should look at some Ruby or Python code. Now *THOSE* are cluttered languages. So what's your idea of an "uncluttered" language?
By: fremlinskent. on 18 Dec 08, 23:23:00
Only a mad man would call this "clean and uncluttered: public class HelloWorld { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("hello world"); } } It's nasty, ugly and cluttered. That's not to say that Java is not a capable programming language.

Hi Prof .... :)) First off, thank you for posting tutorials for beginners. Please allow me to make a small suggestion. You may want to expand a little more on passages like what is the meaning of extentions such as bat, java, compile ans you save each notepad document. Also if they need to be all saved in group in a folder, or if they can just sit on the desktop. I study at the Open University, and tutorial like your videos, are a blessing. . Kind regards, Seth

I have that same problem. Anime is lame. I can't stand it. Oversized eyes, sincerely angry looks, spiky hair. Pathetic.
By: bogdanp9. on 18 Dec 08, 15:12:22
why is everyone obsessed with manga and anime ?
By: threehitswonder. on 15 Dec 08, 06:17:39
lol. properly indenting and commenting your code and making it readable has nothing to do with "doing open source". try to code something big with poor readability and then looking at it a few months later. you'll prefer to throw it all away and start from scratch =P. even if you're the only one working on a piece of code, you still need a nice looking code. also, beginning to learn with an IDE will only make you lazy.
By: threehitswonder. on 15 Dec 08, 06:08:16
anyone who starts to learn programming for the first time with java is very likely to give up in the first week. start with Pascal, it's wonderful to learn. if you're already familiar with basic programming concepts then you can try starting with Python, or even C, 'at most'. and 70k0 is right: use notepad in the beginning! it builds discipline, and you can focus exclusively on learning the language.
