This is really bad, why would he even want to cover this? Idiot.

Beck is not only a competent player but he grew up on country blues. Bonny Raitt probably would have done a good job but this is definitely more gritty and in the vein of Skip.

Elitist! ooohhh no.... God I hate that word.
By: cgarr. on 03 Nov 08, 10:57:46
and ps. attacking ppl's grammr, spelling..etc on the internet is just goes to show the extent of your maturity. and if u thought the nazi comment was offensive here's a better one: good on you for being both black AND jewish. you can now actually afford your chicken and watermelons rather than steal them.
By: cgarr. on 03 Nov 08, 10:52:31
ya deep purple, korean folk songs and ramones... such refined and broad taste in music you have. i will shut up also. all i wanted to say was that what beck is doing in the above video is not another i'm-a-big-rockstar-so-ill-just-get-this-over-and-done-with kinda cover. there is something you're obviously missing and is definately not a mere 'mockery' as you simply put it. well yea beauty is in the eye of the beholder. have fun listening to your deep purple, korean folk songs and the ramones.

I'm done speaking with you people. I never judged the Flying Lizards' cover of the song, because I've never heard it. "Lol @ you're videos"? "You are videos"? What is that supposed to mean? I'm not Son House? Did I say that I was Son House?
By: doctorpep1. on 01 Nov 08, 22:46:59
Again, for those of you who think I only like '30s Country Blues, perhaps you should know that I also like Deep Purple, Korean folk songs, the Ramones and CCR. The "Nazi" comment is particularly ridiculous and offensive, and so is the "You're not black" comment, considering how I'm both Jewish and black. I'm done talking to you people; it's more rewarding to watch paint dry.
By: doctorpep1. on 01 Nov 08, 22:41:25
I don't know what you mean by "Folk-Blues aesthetic", because "Folk-Blues" encompasses many different styles and tunings. Skip James doesn't sound anything like Brownie McGhee, who sounds nothing like Fred McDowell.
By: cgarr. on 01 Nov 08, 05:27:47
"Why didn't the producers simply have Corey Harris, Alvin Youngblood Hart or Bonnie Raitt cover this song?" because the producers wanted the audience to see how influential the blues was in shaping today's popular music. and calling beck's cover a mockery just "because (it) contains none of the emotion or musical skill that the original does" once again proves my point. thanks for digging your own grave.
By: Heeey333. on 01 Nov 08, 01:59:03
Now that I have defined elitist for you, let me also mention that Beck started out playing at folk cafe's covering blues songs, which is something to do with the blues. I listen to a ton of delta blues(own Complete Early Recordings of Skip James), but also listen to NEW music that has actually been made in my lifetime. Composing pseudo intellectual poetry for people doesn't really make good points. lol@you're videos, you're not Son House.

What I was trying to do was get my substance across, not my grammar. I'm sorry that it made such a huge impression on you. Anyway, this has everything to do with being an elitist, the fact that you think this is a "mockery of Skip James' music" and if you don't know that "you're an imbecile". "unrelated to Blues AND is not a competent player" and "you're grammar is atrocious" is pretty eilietst to.
By: doctorpep1. on 31 Oct 08, 17:13:44
I don't want to keep saying this, but your grammar is atrocious. Yes, this is a mockery of Skip James' original, because if contains none of the emotion or musical skill that the original does. Why didn't the producers simply have Corey Harris, Alvin Youngblood Hart or Bonnie Raitt cover this song? Why choose an artist who is unrelated to Blues AND is not a competent player?
By: doctorpep1. on 31 Oct 08, 17:12:01
Right, I can't appreciate other forms of music. That's what I listen to everything from Skip James to the Ramones to Deep Purple to the Platters to Korean folk songs, right? Nice job judging someone whom you've never met, fool.
By: doctorpep1. on 31 Oct 08, 17:10:49
Again, another person who lacks fundamental knowledge of English grammar. I should take a Popular Music 101 class? That's very funny, considering how I've read many books on music and know about Blues, Jazz, Rock 'n' Roll, Classic Rock, Punk Rock, Heavy Metal, Old-Timey music, etc. "Nazi"? Yes, I do genetic experiments on children and sodomize Jewish men. Good job, idiot.
By: doctorpep1. on 31 Oct 08, 17:08:53
It's "you're AN idiot". The fact that you can't use proper grammar automatically disqualifies any "point" you may be trying to make. "Worthless elitist"? This has nothing to be with being an elitist. The music of Skip James is from a different time and place with which Beck can not get in touch. Are you going to deny that, too?
By: cgarr. on 27 Oct 08, 07:43:19
oh and heres another thing that will get you raging and rambling. flying lizards' cover of the song, money. search it up on the tube and watch them make a "mockery" out of this classic rnb number.
By: cgarr. on 27 Oct 08, 07:40:20
within his artistic spectrum. and how pretentious of you to just condemn it as a "mockery" to the great skip james. you're perfectly entitled to your opinions but such public display of ignorance surely is an offence to the whole of humanity. people like you sir make a misanthrope out of me.
By: cgarr. on 27 Oct 08, 07:31:37
and how old are you? your fanboyism just leaks of immaturity. i get better conversations about music with slipknot fans than i do with you, which leads us to the very reason i call you nazi. it is because u don't have(or simply can't, due to ignorance) appreciation for other forms of music just like nazis dont have appreciation for other races. beck did what he considered artistically appropriate as a tribute.
By: cgarr. on 27 Oct 08, 07:09:43
see what increiblo is saying. he's on the right track. you sir still cling to your nazi ways and only see things in a 2dimensional plane. blues isnt the only style of music there is in this universe. i like the blues, i'm quite a fan myself, but hey i like other stuff too. and some of us here can actually appreciate more than just one kind of music. seriously enroll at a local university and take a popmus101 paper or something.
By: Heeey333. on 26 Oct 08, 19:08:04
You're a idiot, hes paying tribute to his him by covering this song. Mockery? Greatest music ever produced? Worthless elitist.
By: MikeSpikeita. on 26 Oct 08, 13:20:29
i'm glad to see that you're confronting and i'm learning so many new thigs, but please guys don't be rude :D
By: doctorpep1. on 26 Oct 08, 04:01:01
What I said is perfectly logical. I'm not being "a Nazi"; I'm dedicated to the greatest music that this country ever produced and if you think that it's all right for Beck to make a mockery of Skip James' music, then you're an imbecile.
By: doctorpep1. on 26 Oct 08, 03:59:19
You are pathetically clueless. I have no interest in Gary Moore or Beck. The difference between John Hurt and B.B. King is their singing, their background, the era they were born, their guitar playing style, the fact that one played electric Blues and the other played Pre-Blues and early Blues songs on an acoustic guitar. Good enough for you?
By: doctorpep1. on 26 Oct 08, 03:57:44
It's very simple: Acoustic Country Blues cannot be separated from the time and place it existed. Beck is disgracing Mr. James by poorly performing the song, which is a masterpiece. You don't seem to understand that the makers of the documentary should have just let Alvin Youngblood Hart, Corey Harris, Taj Mahal and Bonnie Raitt play these songs. And let's not forget John Hammond, Jr., too.
