Mk. I wasn't sure if it was just a different version. I like the way you cut it though, makes the song seem a little more energetic and action-y because it jumps right in. Btw, I loved your video. I agree with you...BUT...I'm not uninformed (and I don't mean that to sound catty). I don't think her pitch at 8:30 is intentional. She just flubbed it (and just before that, she was WAY off the beat). I'm looking at the score, and I've seen this opera many times. There's no WAY she should be that low, and that's why she starts the C a little under the pitch and has to compensate. cheers.

That's foolish. Criticism is not about showing off. Just because you can't do better yourself does not mean your observations are invalid. Sure, you might recognize a "mistake" that was intentional if you're uninformed, but you still noticed it, and you only need your senses to do so. I'm not sure what herr beautenor was listening to here, but he seems to interperate "off key" with a wonderful strauss key change! Easily done to the un-trained ear.I've Played this Opera many times and this is a superb account. This is obviously a dvd, i doubt performance mistakes would pass through the editors fingers in such a way that anybody would be able to notice. Thanks for putting this on though!!

Elektra is absolutely among the most horrible for a singer's vocal health. I haven't seen one single live performance where the poor soprano wouldn't have shown signs of extreme tiredness towards the end of this scene. Chapeau, madame Marton!

If I wanted to have a career as a singer, I would have done it so I'm hardly a "wanna be". I didn't say anything negative, which you would know if you could read. I stated facts. She was not with the conductor at one point, and she is a little out of tune. That's not critical, it's honest. I never said I could do better, nor would I. Hmmm....this is good, although she did get a little lost somewhere close to the end. Still, if you've ever seen the score...Schumann-Heink once said it's almost unsingable. She's kind of in the wrong key at the end and has to make compensation to get up to the C. BUT, she's committed, and she looks scary as hell. I like her best in Italian rep.

In my 35 years of going to opera at The Metropolitan Opera, I never saw a greater performance than Dame Gwyneth Jones in "Elektra." She gave 150% and the audience went wild at the end. This video is very similar to her Met performances, except at the Met, she wore a black wig. Thank you Dame Gwyneth for your great art. We will never forget you. DG New York City

The Death of Elektra was an amazing fight. She should have won because she was better. But Bullseye was a really good fighter, too. He got too lucky. Maybe he's got some mutant power. Frank Miller made comics more like movies than any other comic book artist I've ever seen. I'd love to see this on the big screen, but I've still got his original comics and they all kick ass! I expected a huge failure when I spotted this clip. I was wrong. Somehow you reached back through time into my childhood head and captured what I felt and thought when Bulleseye said "your good..... but Me... I'm Magic!" and plunged the sai through her. Frank Miller would be proud. Excellent choice of music and editing. The first clip that ever generated emotion of any kind. I was glued to the screen. Good job.

What I remember most from this DVD is the way Marton walked on stage for her final bow. It was so clear that she was completely exhausted physically, and probably emotionally. Say what you will about this high note or that -- the woman left blood on the stage that night.

Strauss surely noticed, that things like Elektra belong to the most difficult things so sing; so I think he perhaps wanted a singer who shows us the realm of ecstatics also by beeing totally exhausted at the end. Just Eva Marton! For me she is much better than Nilsson who is totaly emotionless and sterile for me and unfortunately /I know this is very subjective/ I do not like her voice colour at all. Eva is the best Elektra both dramtically and vocally for me.

Thanks for the good advice. I bought the Mitropoulos, and it's totally knockout: so musical and dramatic; for me Inge sounds better than the studio Bohm one of a few years later, if that isn't too heretical to say. Good luck!

First, thank you for your civilized request; this is not too often apparent on YouTube. Next, how could I have forgotten the l957 Mitropoulos? It is simply hair-raising, with Mitropoulos and Borkh at their absolute greatest; the sound on that recording is terrific as well. I would go so far as to say it is the ELEKTRA of a lifetime.

This music shatters me; I made a spectacle of myself in the front row of he Metropolitan Opera, weeping audibly and shaking hysterically. I must've been horribly treated in a former life! As good as this is, Borkh's recording of excerpts with Fritz Reiner in LIVING STEREO is hair-raisingly better! Let's not forget the sublime Astrid Varnay or Birgit Nilsson in this role, either! ELEKTRA is one of my top five favorite operas. All hail, Richard Strauss!

There are plenty of good sound recordings of Elektra with Nilsson in her prime, the Solti set comes first to mind. No video though, unless you count the pathetic Met DVD from the same period as this clip. Nilsson was never visually interesting anyway.

Bear in mind that not all operas are meant to focus on beautiful singing. Verdi's Macbeth and Strauss' Electra are obvious examples. This clip displays artists who have performed these roles for years if not decades. The interpretations are exemplary despite the vocal imperfections. It is designed to be more dramatic than bel canto. This is not a display of weakness, but of artistic strength.

Nilsson's voice was not the most beautiful but was limpid and sometimes crystal clear. She had stamina, promptness of attack and, yes , a HUGE charisma Whenever I see or read something about her, or watch an interview, I am absolutely ' caught ' by her warm magnetism. It doesn't matter if she yelled here, the audience goes mad because they thanked her for being on stage again.

haha...two of my all time facourite singers (well one) and to me, i am a huge strauss fan, this sounds like the video clip equivalent of a bad period pain when you are rolling around the floor screaming.but i love it!!!its totally why people take the mick out of opera, scenes like this are responsible for that, i just adore it, it makes me laugh --- strauss is my favourite composer...he knew about suffering , he knew...his music,like one big clash of unbearable emotions...please post more xx

I have never thought Nilssons voice to be beautiful but something about her just simply captivates me. When I hear her or see her, I just cant stop listening or watching. Shes just magnetic. I will never forget the first time I saw her Elektra. I was hooked! Salome and Elektra are 2 of the coolest Operas Ive witnessed and Ive seen ALOT. Strauss was a genius!

WOW!! Jones may certainly be louder than Nilsson, but her tone is so driven, wobbly, piercing and at top very forced; she seems to want to be loud, whereas Nilsson has a warmer fuller lower register here, vibrating like an organ. I always say any coloratura can be loud, but to have an organ like vocality, yes, the truly big voices are quite rare. And, indeed -- Jones' Desdemona is heavenly voiced in her earlier days.

I heard both live. Jones at the start had an absolutely gorgeous voice - something Nillson never really had. Alas Jones went downhill fast and early. She developed a huge wobble. She literally drove me out of the theater in one of her later performances. She ruined many commercial recordings. But boy she was loud! The biggest voice I've ever heard. Nillson marshalled her resources and would deliver those laser like high Cs. But Jones could paste you against the rear wall. No other voice like it.

She was a soprano, but turned to mezzo in her late age, giving voice to superb Strauss' Klythemnestra and Herodiades. The same for Martha Moedl. Agree on the first two, but never forget that Behrens -also being a great singer- was not enough for Elektra and Bruennhilde, THE two REAL dramatic roles of all...

I love the posts from the armchair viewers. This is one HUGE taxing physically mentally vocally difficult aria. The entire role will take 10 pounds off of you when you are finished performing it. I sing this horridly difficult role. This is a live performance. Not a recording that can be "tweeked" for perfection. Ms. MZ we have a friend in common and she is restructuring this role in my voice. I APPLAUD YOU.

I still class this as one of the most exciting Proms I've ever been to. I was a young singing student at the time, now I'm looking at Elektra myself...This performance still remains a benchmark for me. I was only boring a colleague with how terrific it was the other day!

Marilyn has much more voice than is usually acknowledged. Maybe because there is a lack of dignity in her performance? A missbrauchtes Königskind retains her regality now matter how erniedigt she has come to be, a little embarrassing. Pushing vocally and flailing around is not drama. She could benefit from an acting coach who can focus her obvious talents toward achieving a truly tragic performance - far more effective. Yes, nordfrese81, she's scary, but not in good way.

I saw her Elektra in Seattle about 10 years ago. She was simply amazing. Perfect voice for the part. Very emotional sound. Not pretty like Alessandra Marc, but large and very expressive for this type of Strauss role. She is also an attractive woman: large enough to support the voice without being a cow.

My memory of her voice in year 2001 was that of a very big voice. Not beautiful, a bit smoky, so to speak, but very drammatic. I loved her Musetta too. People tell me she sometimes was too...over the top and that she overacted and oversung.Her problem was perhaps too much energy and that hardened her production in earlier years. I do not know.

Zschau actually has had quite a career, even though she does not have too many engagements at the top houses. She sounds impressive here, but her voice is neither exceptionally beautiful nor stentorian. But then, she definitely can be relied upon in delivering most of the dramatic soprano repertoire.

Just to make sure I am not misunderstood. Not that Zschau came to Argentina to make her debut at Teatro Argentino. She came to DEBUT THE ROLE OF TURANDOT AT 65 !!!! Superwoman !!! Nilsson dropped it at around 58 and Marilyn STARTED AT 65. What an underrated and MONUMENTAL ARTIST ! Why we know this enormous quality years after ?
