Repetition is the mother of skill. Basic movements at the barre are like a singer doing vocal prctice. It's all based on muscle memory and passion. Maybe you should've tried contemporary or jazz?

Yes, an interesting deal where the disguised nobleman is a nice guy. Rossini's 'Barber of Seville' presents a similar situation in a comic format. That said, we in the 21st century, and those playwrights and librettists of the 19th century, must have known that noblemen would rarely treat peasant women with such respect. The Duke of Mantua using the disguise of a working class guy to seduce Gilda in Verdi's 'Rigoletto' is probably way closer to "how it really happened" (then and now).

She finds out and dies of a broken heart. Act 2: He goes to visit her grave and meets the wilis, a group of ghost girls who all died of broken hearts and dance men to death in the night. Giselle dances with him to make it look like he's dancing even when he's exhausted. She saves him. It's quite beautiful :)

Her extensions, her impeccable technique and her AMAZING MUSICALITY are all a pleasure to watch! I agree with industrialxstrength; she is NOT ANOREXIC, or else, as already stated, she would not have the strength to dance; ballerina's muscles are not bulky because they need to be flexible, to, all the stretching elongates their muscles and while doing so it improves their line. Svetlana Zakharova is definitely an amazing ballerina!

In sports, you do anaerobic excercises that are meant to build muscle and muscle strength. In ballet, muscle only gets in the way of flexibility, so you'd do aerobic excercises that build up your endurance. They do a lot of it so that they can perform for long periods. Doing exercise in general = weight loss. She probably eats very healthily (lots of veggies and fruits, etc.), and in addition losses a bit more weight due to practice. IF SHE WERE ANOREXIC, SHE WOULDN'T HAVE THE STRENGTH TO DANCE.

I agree with you, she is great, nice line, but lacks musicality. The ballerinas legs should be like the directors batutes. She has to direct the music with her body. But Ms. Zakharova is always one or two notes late.

I'm not crazy about this production of "Giselle". The choreographic alterations bug me. But Lopatkina is quite beautiful, especially in her 2nd Act. I love the way she peels her feet off the floor; there is so much power and "weight" in each step, but at the same time it's all very light, and ghostlike.

Let me rephrase this another way. First, I was commenting on another video when I wrote she was too athletic, so I retract that. She's an exquistive Giselle, one of the best I've seen, and I've seen quite a few. Secondly, I agree, the Kirov tends to set the standard, but that doesn't mean in this case, that extensions that high are appropriate to the Romantic Style--I don't feel it is. It seems to be the trend, so I guess it's the norm now, but I don't like it. C'est la vie.

Tarboujh. I agree with you. I don't like this athletic sytle, more suited to Olga Korbut. The Kirov/Mariinsky may set the standards for the rest of the world now. But they also seem to want to present money driven spectaculars which deviate entirely from the essence of the ballet. I prefer some earler versions from the Bolshoi, thank you very much. The Cuban Ballet and Alonso also knew how to present Giselle in a more authentic way.

oh please, you can't see any bunions! Point shoes make the feet look bigger anyway and Alina is quite small so her feet are gonna look bigger in proportion compared to other dancers. Personally i think feet are just ugly in universal terms but in terms of ballet I think she has good feet.

OMGESUS!!! If you guys love Ferri and Fracci, you absolutely MUST see Xiomara Reyes as "Giselle". I used to like Ferri best for this, but now it's a tie. And if you saw Reyes two years ago, throw away your old perception of her. She's ENTIRELY different now, triple the ballerina she ever was. So, yeah, if you like Ferri and Fracci, check out Reyes. Ferri is a wonderful actress. Her interpretation of the mad scene was fantastic, and when she died, she really flopped lifeless to the floor. This variation is emotional but not executed as flawlessly or effortlessly as how Kirov's Galina Mezentseva performed it.

i disagree strongly... i am a tall ballet dancer and i hate that ppl discriminate that and decide what giselle should look like. she does a beautiful job and i dont think her height should matter.

She is very beautiful, and her technique is wonderful, with gorgeous extensions and much ballon. But I don't see the loving peasant girl beneath the Wili costume. For me this Giselle is sad but lacking in humanity.

Well, I think it is hard for dancers to act well in these kind of ballets e.g Giselle, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella. Because they have obvious meanings and they don't really "move you". The fairytale ballets are what I call "pantomime ballets". Some dancers do do it better than others I suppose. I personally prefer more meaningful ballet's such as "The Valley of Shadows."

I think individuality is important for dancers. We learn the steps, understand the role, know the choreography...but we must dance from the heart, where we personally feel the character. Some dancers can transform into great swans, great peasant girls... but some are simply GREAT ballerinas, Irina is a great ballerina!

Giselle ...cannot wait to get this DVD Saw Dance Expression and Sunday Express gave Irinas performance Top Top Marks ...and caught the ballet in Northampton It was sensational ...her acting in first Act was so emotive - she conveyed from her first step that despair and doom would follow her joy...an unbelievably wonderful performance We cried !

Having seen her dance both the roles you mentioned, I can understand what you mean, although I do not agree. I found her Odette somewhat more memorable than her Giselle, though I still injoyed it immensely. I don't understand what you mean by wishy washy though...

I didn;t like her Odette and I don't liker her Giselle. She is an amazing dancer, no doubt about that, but when I watch her do the iconic roles of Giselle or Odette, I am watching "Irina Kolesnkiova as Giselle" and not "Giselle" I think her interpretations are too goopy and melodramatic. Great ballerinas like Fonteyn, Larson, or Cojocaru dance the role, and demonstrate their techinique and artistry without being soo dramatic and wishy-washy.
