A BNSF grain train passes through my back yard on April 21, 2007. Well, not really my back yard, but less than a mile away. The location is the Auburn, WA "M" Street crossing. The empty grain train is going from TEMCO/Cargill in Tacoma back to the midwest to refill. Empty grain trains comprise most of the traffic on the BNSF Stampede Pass line.

Shoot just a few minutes ago I saw a grain train pull into the Auburn Yard, consisting of 4 head units, 2 min train helpers, and 2 end of train helper units...Great way of distributed power. This also could have been a Power move for other grain sitting in the yard. But yeah I hear and see these mamoths every day! Great line when there around...

Empty grain trains from Tacoma, and some from Kalama, and Interbay goes over the Stampede sub. Sometimes there will be a west bound loaded grain over Stampede too, but the train is cut in half due to tonnage and grade on that sub.

this line runs right behind our house in Auburn. You can count on 11, 3, 5, 7 both ends of the day to see a train and yes they make the house rumble. I love the trains and sometime we get a conductor to wave when he go's by. When they quit running a few years back it was really weard not hearing them but now they are back and all is well.

Yeah, an 8-minute wait is pretty excessive (due to sharp curves on both ends of this stretch of track). The City of Auburn and BNSF were in negotiations to split the cost of an over/under pass when they reopened this line in 1996, but it never materialized.

It used to be the route of the Northern Pacific North Coast Limited between Auburn, WA and St. Paul Minnesota. BNSF has leased the line east of Spokane to Montana Rail Link, and passenger service between Seattle-Tacoma and Minnesota is provided over mostly what used to be Great Northern rails pre-merger. There used to also be a third line Seattle-Tacoma to Minnesota, via the Milwaukee Road over Snoqualamie Pass, but that's a bike trail now.

Power moves are quite common on the railroad. Too many engines in Seattle and not enough somewhere east. I see these trains go thru Spokane all the time, mostly with 3 units.

It may seem over powered, but Stampede Pass has some very steep grades. Some of the engines were probably cut out at Ellensburg, after the grades become less steep.
