I'm not sure how well you can get away with saying Mason's pocket is circumspect. He made quite a late-period career for himself with the smooth (aka: pocket heavy) group Fourplay. Plus, as much as I love Clark, his chops can get in the way of having a infallible groove...

As I listen, I believe you are right. Mason did not tune his snare that high, and he was heavier on the high-hat....listen the cut "Traitor", and you can tell the difference...he was paired up with Louis Johnson, due to their chemistry with Quincy Jones in earlier years.

I believe it was Mike Clark on drums on the original studio track .... drum credits are a bit sketchy on the liner notes from Man Child, I know, but the groove really feels Mike Clark to me. I don't think Harvey Mason was on Man Child at all, and this is definitely worthy of investigation. And FYI, it was Bennie Maupin on sax on the original Headhunters album, not Wayne Shorter, but Shorter is on Man Child.
