IMHO, McCoy Tyner trumps them both. Watch as he mouths the lines he's playing during his solo. He translating the sounds in his head directly into his instrument. This is the true mark of a master. His lines in the tune are very clear, precise, and lyrical. It like he's speaking to you. Not to say that Trane and Dolphy aren't on the same level - they are - they're just not bringing it like McCoy. Just my opinion...

His practice sessions, alone, focused on tonal quality, chords that included the piano range, creating different insights into chordal structures, writing/composing and rehearsing, at times, with his group. He said, as did McCoy Tyner in a recent interview I conducted with him, that the shows were most like rehearsals as he was constantly searching for "that sound."

Coltrane still has a massive influence on tenor saxplayers all over the world. BUT: his sound is lousy. He did not have the muscial ear for intonation. This he compensated with innovation and technique. Too bad for him. He once stated about Stan Getz' wonderful sax sound "We would all play like Getz if we only could".
