I've been wanting to play this game for about a decade, ever since I first heard about it. High time I try to set up some Saturn emulator... Been a huge fan of Cybernator ever since it came out here. Played Target Earth about a year ago but couldn't really get into it. This here looks excellent, and I also gotta play the translated Front Mission: Gun Hazard one of these days.

I remember myself being so impressed about assault suit leynos (target earth) and I also enjoyed assault suit valken (cybernator) a lot. shame that this was only released in japan and no other than sega saturn :(. I donwloaded the rom for assault suit leynos 2 and an ssf emulator, but i was unable to make them work. the snes and sega genesis emulators r far more simple to use.

after reading the script for this game, its a strangely complicated story. its weird cuz its not just good vs. evil, its the humans who became cyborgs wanting to become part of earth again and earth saying fuck off and the cyborgs invading as a result. plus early on, they talk about a world war destroying communications so thats why earth couldn't respond to the expeditionary force but then, you learn at the end, that there was no miscommunication. what a mindfuck

A better ending? At the time of its release, this had one of the BEST anime-style endings of any cartridge-based game, especially for being a rather obscure side-scrolling shooter. Agreed on the difficulty, though... this was also one of the hardest games ever made, but this ending made it worth the pain, IMO. Thanks for posting this!

Man this one of the 1st games I played at my cousin's house back in 89 when they just bought the genesis. Classic game awesome soundtracks which by the way I finally downloaded the other day and is the original track no remix or anything. I can not agree with this more . This game has the reputation for being one of the hardest games ever made, although that reputation is a bit undeserved, (for the reasons the tehkao mentioned) unless played in hyper mode. I can beat the game without dying even once and that is because of the crazy regenerating abilities of your Assault Suit. Enemy bullets also move relatively slow in this game and are easy to dodge, especially when you can fly.

I have beaten it on hyper mode a few times (w/out cheating). I totally agree with you that level 2 is the hardest at this difficulty. In particular, things get ugly quickly right after Rance destroys your shuttle ally and is driven away. The other levels after that really aren't *that* hard.

Yes that makes you invincible. There is also another trick. If you play the first level and ONLY destroy the end ship, make sure it dosen't explode on any enemy guys, because explosions from an enemy can destroy them too.(so advanced for it's day) When you finish the level, you will have 2800 points and when you pick your items for level 2, you will have access to ALL weapons and upgrades! :D

I was at a Videogame Exchange many years ago and I was looking at a bargain bin of Genesis videogames and saw this game sitting there. No box no manual just a simple cartridge with a white label and the Target Earth logo. Cost me $5. God damn was I suprised to find this awesome game. I would play it on my Genesis but emulator makes it so easy. Hope they put it on Wii. Good memories

Yo! This was one of my first games for the Genesis. I was bargain shopping games for the Genesis. I bought this game in 1990 around Christmas for $19.95 at Toys"R"Us. The story line was cool and the ending was worth it. Infact, the ending and the music with it were perfect! I know it may take a while, but could you place the full ending on your channel for nostalgia and fans of "Target Earth" sake.

It will work, if you do the disc swap trick. Just download the Japanese ISO, patch it to NTSC-U using the Saturn Region Patcher (google it), then burn, and viola. There's an incredible video here on YouTube for teaching the disc swap trick, it's titled "SATURN SWAP TRICK", in all caps, just search for that one. After watching it, it only took one try for me to get it.

RE: Nintega: To defeat the reactor core, make sure you have an M.Pod left, and just unleash it. It will be destroyed in seconds! It's possible to defeat it by picking off all the turrets slowly, then pecking away, but the M.Pod is the way to go. Regular homing missiles can work too but they are so slow it's very difficult.

I beat this game. The easiest way to beat this descent level is to hover near the atmosphere. As the guys try to get at you, they turn into the lower atmosphere and blow up and die :)

That scene was never in the game, hence removed scene. The commander dies a more painful, yet heroic death on the level 8 of the game. This scene technically takes place in level three as this is the only time in the game where the ship is doing reentry into the atmosphere.

Yea man this game was friggin hard, the day I beat it I was siked lol I played it on both difficulties as well and found little or no diference but never tried hyper lol. Great classic game I think completely under rated w/ awsome music. I still play it to this day and beat it lol

There are more enemies on hard, but you don't really notice it until you see that you have an HG gun by the 7th level O_O. I've only beaten the 2nd level on Hyper two times (out of thousands of attempts...) And I learned a trick on the sixth level: when on the uphill fighting part, you can stand right below a hill and no enemies will spawn and attack you for some reason. I did that so I could recharge my shields before I went back in the fray. The 50 SC is your friend in that one, lol.

Same here. Same here, man. I never could really find a detectable difference between "normal" and "hard." To me, "hard" and "normal" were exactly the same in difficulty. Did you find any difference? Hyper, on the other hand..lol

This game is awesome. I can beat it on normal/hard with my eyes closed. I could beat HYPER mode easily if I could just have a friggin backpack by level 2. Good god. I think level 2 is impossible 99% of the time you try it on hyper mode. If there's more than 6 grenadiers spawning on the screen with fountains of grenades spewing everywhere, you're pretty much %#$@ed no matter what you do. I could beat the other levels pretty consistently (don't get me wrong, they're hard too).

I love this game. The soundtrack kicks ass. This whole game has an epic feel to it. BTW, I'm one of those nuts who can beat this game on the maximum difficulty setting without cheating. Since the enemies in the game have very random patterns, it sometimes takes a couple tries. Has anyone ever found a good use for the Burst weapon? So hard to get, yet even with the "full arsenal" trick, I never found a use for it anywhere in the game. BTW, the uncensored japanese original is even better.

The play-control was amazing - you felt the weight of the suit with the the controls; the weapon earning was fun; the levels were super varied; the graphics were lush but not overly busy (like cybernator); the difficulty made it rewarding; the story was heavy, and for one of the first times in video games, you had allies that actually fought, and that you cared about. Over all, nothing in the game seemed tacked-on or neglected - everything about the game was that way for a reason. Long live T.E.

I know how you feel. I really felt like it was me in that Assault Suit flying through space from planet to planet and fighting the hordes of Chron. I didn't even know about anime or mecha at that age (except for maybe Voltron), but the game had an inexplicable immersive quality that I rarely feel playing other games. Kinda makes me wish we were at war with a vengeful civilization with advanced technology. Life would not only be less dull, but there'd be renewed interest in space exploration.

What made a fan is that game is like an epic of a hero traveling afar, fighting against the enemy, went through hell and come back relieve to his love one. I feel as if I was immerse into this world. This is game is so good that I really wonder what it would be like if it was made into anime that goes closely with the storyline or something like that?

Yep, I am aware of that trick. Another dandy is this- Everytime you have only 2 continues left, press start at the option screen and Leana (your wife? girlfriend?) will show up-- and your continues will boost to 9. Incidentally I am also a big Robotech/Macross fan.I've also heard good stuff about Armored Trooper VOTOMS. I just bought the first stage and am waiting to check it out.

I loved the Macross/Gundam feel of the game. Being a huge Anime space opera fan since I was 5 years old, this game was just perfect for me. Incidentally, there is a little trick I learned way back when I last played this (1990), if you press start on the Player 2 controller when you are just about to die, you get invincibility

Out of curiosity, what did you guys enjoy about Target Earth? What made it better than other games? For me, it was the sense of awe that this game elicited-from the soundtrack to the space theme. I have always been interested in our solar system, and was impressed by the space graphics and semi-realistic treatment of gravity, atmospheric re-entry, and spaceflight. The attempt at a good story was also revolutionary for a side-scroller shoot 'em up! So what made you all fans of Target Earth?

That reminds me- This game was stolen from the trunk of my dad's car while on vacation in NYC. I guess I didn't have enough allowance money because I didn't get another copy until some years later... Now I just play my ROM whenever I am in the mood for nostalgia.
