This is one of my fav MacDowell pieces. Just about every tune in this suite is awesome, I've played a couple of them but haven't learned this one yet. Great job on this one, yea it's tough to hear the dynamics but people need to realize that could be the camera position and mic quality. Starting at measure 50 you need to make sure that you are playing very quietly, while bringing out the melody. Keep the rhythm crisp. Make sure that your hands are synchronized, especially in the chromatic section. And don't play too fast.

he makes more sense of some sections than almost anyone else. one of his more thought-out performances - in stately pace and steady tone reminds me of paderewski. once again, everyone, remember: many of these recordings (especially video/tv) have volume leveling applied for broadcast. you're not hearing all the dynamics, by any means - list to horowitz at the white house for a graphic for-instance!

Yes, I agree with your comment, and unfortunately this performance wasn't "it." Even so, it's nice to see it and hear it. For me, recordings are never as good as live performance and to hear him play this piece live and play it with that clear powerful operatic style he had - well, those things remain in one's heart, not in a dust jacket, or CD case, I'm afraid.

He didn't really hate to be recorded. He was/is a perfectionist and knew that once a record was made, that was "it" to the public's ear. He had difficulty decided which recording was "the One!" God, what a pianist. I have seen him in concert many times and absolutely no one plays or looks like him sitting at the piano - PERFECTION, a beautiful pianist, such a majestic, nobility to his playing - GOLDEN!

the harpsichord sound has a percussive effect to unify the the rhythm of the baroque orchestra and players use it the harpsichord to play together. Of course you can note the additional role of the harpsichordist that is similar to a conductor. The harpsichordist uses body gestures to communicate musicality, entries and ends. Appreciate the harpsichord more! Don't just say it makes such faint noise compared to the piano..... :)

i love chopin. got loads of horrowitz's cds. unfortunately he played the polonaise with too much pedal. this version on the other hand is in my opinion how it should be played. not so much with technical flair as horrowitz but berman plays as chopin would have. mad, creative, tragic yet romantic. that was chopin, wasnt it?

parts seem rushed through. facial expression wasn't what i was originally referring to. while there are a few passages of some performance aspects about it, alot of it seems rushed and brushed over... that said tho, those LH descending octaves are impressive, can't take that away from the guy.

I disagree with you. I think he shows a lot of artistic expression - it is subtle - nothing wrong with that - as a matter of fact, the more subtle the expression, the more the artist is concentrating on his playing - as opposed to the audience reaction. I am at a loss to determine why you feel he shows no expression. What do you want him to do? Smile? Roll is head around - flair his nostrils? That would so detract from the reason he is there - to play!

kajohada - Martha has her own style and personality. she is a great technician, we know. and very powerful and fast . maybe that's the reason that she plays sometimes as if the music doesn't mean anything before she suddenly finds a few notes that are "musical" ...at least that's always been my impression. but her polonaise can not possibly compare with rubinstein's , especially in the concept of "Majesty" and bigness. IMO.

kajohada -he played piano in as natural a manner as is possible played it FIRST as a MUSICIAN, secondly only as a pianist. many play "better" pianistically..but often the result of carefully studied, prepared, calculatedness that later becomes "natural". Rubinstein played with ELAN that few approached in its naturalness. let us be GRATEFUL Rubinstein did not succeed in hanging himself successfully in despair: "... but my old belt snapped from my weight..and realized the beauty of life".

this is correct - by dtcurtin. the actual physical movement does influence the over-all sound and phrasing. for example: a pianist that moves the arm high in the air in a curve from the topmost chord of the tchaikovky opening chords to the bottom tends to sound it differently than if he moved over the keys in a low plane. the former will be more rounded , less stiff, using the weight of the arm and shoulders rather than a wrist/arm "pulling" or pushing into the keys: more natural , fuller

actually - if people think again: Rubinstein's arm in the air is really a result of a highly RELAXED mechanism. note that the higher the arm the bigger the sound of that section..and the "fall" of the arm is always well-coordinated with resulting sound or what it follows..and UPON IMPACT, artur actually imperceptively cushions it a split-second before hitting..that is the reason he always had a BIG sound but hardly ever "metallic". it WARM sound he had. most others "cling" to the piano

well--if people are really going to be critical of rubinstein....compare this performance in moscow with martha argerich's , also live. and see where the difference lies: Rubinstein projects BIGNESS , argerichs plays LOUD. Rubinstein breathes between phrases and sections without losing sight of the drama..argerich takes "technical" pauses...etc. etc. etc. people who criticise rubinstein on CHOPIN don't know what they are talking about. i'm sorry to say.

there was a comment several decades ago about rubinstein - in the 1960's when he and his contemporaries like richter, serkin, etc..were considered the standards of great performances and careers and it fits rubinstein: "he may not have the technical wizardry of horowitz, or richter's flights of mysticism, or serkin's highly cerebral approach..but rubinstein had the sum of all with spontaneity and warmth of playing that spoke of life."

I think Liszt spend that time trying to perfect his technique and at the same time explore the piano and compose music. He was heavily influenced by Nicolo Paganini who had that trill technique on the violin that was just insane. the composer only wrote what he felt were the most beautiful notes and melodies he could find.. from there on out.. i don't think the composer wanted everyone to play like they wrote it.. it was 1700~1900 we didn't have ways to record music.. so they wrote it. from here you can play it however you like. but these pieces are genius only. it's like a sculpture from Canova.. once finished do you really want to take or add something too it?

I hate people who reproduce what is written on the page! Yes, surely you can play exactly to a tempo and follow rules yet when you perform you must give a recital. I always try to play a piece faster, slower, with exaggerated rubato, with defined dynamics and pushing notes just to see which sounds right. It's the only way to find a performance that you like. And thank you for your insights!

Compounding the problem with working on pieces, I think, is the modern notion that we must always exactly reproduce 100% what is written on the music page. So you're left with playing the exact same thing the exact same way forever. Worse still, it seems improvisation is becoming a lost art. Supposedly, a few hundred years ago, it was commonplace to improvise in concert; even while playing others' pieces. Thank you for your comment, it's good to know I'm not the only one who thinks these things.

Now there's something I agree with fully. I tend not to spend too long on one piece because it gets to a stage where you've played it, 4 or 5 times over and you start to relax off and get it wrong. I agree with the concept there, yet Franz Liszt is credited to have played the piano for 12 hours a day at some times. The goal and target thing certainly applies, and is a good philosphy however if you wish to go beyond a goal and further than you could aim then immense practice may be required.

8 hours a day is just nonsense spoken by people who know nothing about how to actually learn to play the piano. Find Chuan Changs' book "The fundamentals of piano practice" and read it thoroughly. As a rule of thumb, you should never need to practice more than 20 minutes to accomplish a particular goal. If you haven't done it by then, aim for something smaller (As small as two notes out of a whole passage, for example)

I agree with you all: one must really practice like hell before one can hope to reach Cziffra's level. 8 hours a day. But not everyone can do that. I am a perfect example of one of the lousiest musicians. I started the piano at 4 and kept practising hard until I was 8. Nothing came out of it. I was my teacher's greatest despair. The worst of it is that I loved playing. But I didn't have the talent, the gift, the feeling. So I gave up. And my inaptitude makes me real sad.

if there is anyone willing to become as good or better than georges cziffra, then he or she must put in at least the equivalent amount of practice that cziffra put in. the reason why cziffra's type of talent is so rare is not necesarially because he was naturally gifted of any sort, but it's due to the fact that most people simply lack his calibur of work ethic OR just didnt start playing as early as he did. Cziffra would probably tell u himself that he practiced his ass off to get that good.

lets take this from a musical perspective and put it in a scientific one.ALL people are born with equal potential and ANYONE can play at Cziffras level if the right mentality and the required amount of practice is put in;learning to play the piano or learning to do anything for that matter until it becomes automatic happens due to our brain's ability to remember.for example,cziffra did and all humans generally learn to walk by age 3,but we all put in the eqivalent amount of practice to do this.

So you "have read and asked people..." Obviously I know a lot more than you on this subject. I will not argue with you, that's is below my level. Go find the Cziffras out there and present them to us! Start with all the people playing say the Grand Galop Chromatique. Then do some serious listening, then compare. But I suspect you don't have the knowledge yourself to judge that.

Naja in Teilen hast du da schon Recht aber eine Polonaise halte ich jetzt für nicht so schlimm. ja ist ja alles richtig. nur die deutschen rennen da unten rum und sagen hier ist unser 17. bundesland und hier ist deutschland. ich war da und ahbe es gesehen. und in einer doku sagen fast alle, das sie sich da unten wie sau aufführen, weil sie es sich zu hause nicht erlauben können. genau dewegen schäme ich mich. und ich kenne auch 1000 ausländer die ok sind, hat damit nix zu tun. es geht mir nur darum, dass man sich wo anders nicht so verhält, wie man es zu hause nie machen würde.

Ich beschwere mich über Ausländer im bezug auf die Ehrenmorde oder über das Verhalten vieler Jugendlicher hier ich möchte nur mal den alten Mann in der U-Bahn in München absprechen der halb TOT geschlagen worden ist. B. in die Berge oder sonst wohin. Dann gibt es Menschen die gerne Party feiern. WO GEHT DAS BESSER ALS IN EL ARENAL? Werde diesen Sommer auch dorthin gehen und freue mich schon tierisch darauf. Fascinating clip and what a performance! DG must be ashamed for cutting this piece from the CD "Horowitz in Moscow". They redeemed themselves to some extent by realising "The Last concert" in Hamburg so that we can have another stunning live performance of this polonaise from Horowitz late years. It's completely different than his early recordings for Columbia and RCA but it's by no means less powerful and enchanting. Thank you, kasyapa!

probably not right next, but not as far away as an audience-ear would be. remember that (as i emphasize here and there) many piano videos are volume-leveled, which squashes dynamic extremes and materially distorts the interpretation. for a really loud rendition, likewise volume-leveled, see the 1978 white house rehearsal of this piece and the "carmen" variations i have up.

kasyapa - Didn't he use to say he doesn't want to sound like Jascha Heifetz, i.e. note-perfect? Good for him, I say. But he could get oddly picky when it came to publishing recordings of live performances that had wrong notes in them - witness 1965. Thank God that recital was re-released without touchups.

well, as history has it, Chopin had incredible flexibility in his hands. Do your stretches! Maybe thats why chopin hated Liszt for having so many octaves in his earlier works, and added things, cus Chopins hands were too small too! No, i dont think so haha. And i think Liszt took his girl. he was sanguine about wrong notes - he considered it more important to take risks and express strong feeling. however, there are a number of live performances showing not one flubbed note, not even a part of one. i have some of them up.:)
