I'm just asking questions because I'm a bit confused about his approach since it's very different compared to what I've learned previously. Are you saying that students shouldn't question their teachers even when they are confused and just take everything as it is? And I am trying to learn, that's why I'm asking questions :)

How would we draw from our minds if we don't use some form of symbology or apply some proportions? How would we even understand the human body without using forms? It seems to me that you are implying that proportions and basic shapes are not essential to drawing and might even get in the way of drawing, i hope that is not true, else you'd leave me really confused

from my point of view there is no such thing as gifted. some people are just more capable to draw because they have more control over their hand for example which line goes where, and some people are good with music as they can easely recognise different sounds and stuff like that. and i also think that if there is such thing as gifted you still need to practise a lot to show that gift. (i bet by the end of the week i will have lots of thumbs down)

but this is how they learned, great abstractors and cubists learn to make art in the tradition and then they abstract from forms. The reason these artists are so captivating is because they absolutely understand form and denounce it. I m sure when picasso was learning how to paint he attended lectures much longer then this one. look at both of those artists early work.

There are #1 pencils, as well as #3 and #4. The lower the number, the darker and softer the lead is, however, the higher the number the lighter and harder the lead, and that's just one system. There are many more outside the US.

Sure, if you have careful hands, then you can easily do it, but I have noticed that the graphite will smudge if you use those erasers. Also, try getting a click eraser. Those erase better, and won't leave any residue on your paper.

Your video series is amazing, but you MUST take the camera off of automatic white balance. If you lock the white balance down, the image wont shift from white to yellow constantly. But the content is great.

Neat work doing an overview of the subject. Anyhow, might be worth pointing out that not all brands are fully consistent. (As they should be) Some seem to be about 1 or 2 values off. (Not that you should plug any brand, but recommendations for good ones couldn't hurt.) Also I find that for consistent fine work, it's still hard to beat a mechanical pencil. And some places do sell mechanical leads in different values as well. Also where's the eraser shield and the drafting brush?They're handy too.

lol. you don't know the difference between "1" "2" and "3" pencils, yet, you know the difference for H(number) and B(number) pencils, which is actually the same idea. "1" is softest "2" is medium and "3" is hard. Oh, and, kneaded eraser=50% genius, 50% win. I've never heard of that thing before, and it really is amazing. You can make inverted pencil drawings with it!(And bubble letters)

The pencil has a long point for several reasons... 1) gives you more control over the lines and values you create 2) makes your 'sharp' point last longer 3) gives you reach. The long point allows your hand to be further back from paper so you don't smear your drawing. 4) gives you a finer line so when your designing, composing and measuring your drawing your line will be fine, clean and very very light... so it will fade away after you build your drawing.

what the hell? That guy is an awesome artist and he can be an artist however he wants to be. The technique an artiests uses is not supposed to be criticed (sp?). He probabily isn't the best painter and whoever is considered to be the best painter is probabily not eaither cause there are alot of unknown artists out there. so yea... get my point?

haha you are all very funny... but why are you so pissed because I criticised him when I found a mistake (which he CLEARLY DID!!!). Of course I know that it is an expression and every artist holds the pencil different from the other. (By the way: Jimi Hendrix played the guitar the wrong way.). Get over it and accept that he is not the best painter in the world and not a very good teacher. He knows techniques (which he does not use ;)) and that's it. But there's more to an artist than that.

The way he holds the pencil has nothing to do with anything. He's teaching us to draw, not himself. If he hasn't developed "probably the best way techniques", so what? That doesn't mean he can't show us a better way, even if he doesn't use it or is use to or prefers another method.

about pencil holding technique: he is saying that he prefers one way MOST OF THE TIME, but sometimes to achieve a specific detail or style, it is more successful if you hold the pencil another way. ultimately, you hold a pencil or any other tool in a way that is most comfortable to YOU. over the years, artists have found many ways to hold a pencil and are sharing their discoveries and what works best for them. you are the only person who determines what is best for you.

Look at 5:44. He holds the pencil in the middle and you can see the range his hand has got. Then 6:13 - "the propably best way" to hold a pencil blablabla. But then 7:10 the learning how to sketch. When someone poses, it's better when they keep a stoic expression. I also prefer models to not look directly at me. But that's Haverly's style of drawing: he isn't interested in making ultra-realistic portraits; he wants to create family friendly art, which is why the girls usually have exaggerated eyes and are always smiling.

This is a fabulous lesson. I really enjoyed the way you presented the information. I kind-of understood how the 3 different lighting styles worked before but now I really get it and I can't wait to get home and play! there is no flash, whats attached to the camera is the wireless commander. it basically activates the strobelights on click. the flash you see are the strobelights initiated. setups are on reflects. most occasion, on 200 ISO, we use 1/200, f./6.3, and a prime lens is preferable (35mm). play with the aperture till satisfied.

me too, i draw really well, but its always the proportion of eyes that brings down the whole sketch, like i can never get the left eye looking like the right one, everything else is top nosh for the level i want to be at for my art exam but until i sort out the eyes ill never be able to produce a sketch to this quility !! ahhhh, its driving me mad.

I didn't say that HB was bad. I said I recommend it and I think HB is actually the best by its self because its in the middle of b and h. I said I dont reccomend above hb. Hb i recommend and the rest that i stated but hb and above isn't really useful. You should use Hb for detailing and the rest for shading. Maybe use Hb for lighter stuff. If for portraits all you really require to make a good one is HB and 4B. But I also draw other things. Not just portraits.Soo if you r doing still life or-

i would have to disagree w/ you saying that above HB isn't good for pieces of art, because imo thats just false. HB can make midtones and light tones (if you have good control), but to make it so that your piece can have that nice value, and still be changeable in a neat manner, i would say you will frequently need a 4B or 6B seeing as hair is usually black or dark for that matter. But i must say 6B is prolly best you'll need. i find 8B too soft, and it doesnt apply well imo...

Above hb is not really good for peaces of art. I reccomend a HB, a 2B, 4B and maybe a 6B. Anyway i have from 6H to 9B. There is also a F which stands for fine. You should use them in this order/way, HB for details, 2B for sort of shading, 4B for normal shading and 6B for dark shading. H is useless. I think, this is my opinion. Thankyou

Blending with blenders, tortillions, fingers seem easy but they actually very complicated and take technique to do it right. That's why art teachers say blending is bad. It's not bad but if you don't know what you are doing it won't help you. It's best to learn to control your pressure first. Once you can get a whole range of value with a 2b or 4b pencil then you can learn to use blenders.

i know what u mean, but I've noticed that w/ a tortillion you get certain areas where the shading isn't even, like some areas will have unequal shading because of how small the tortillion is which makes it look sloppy. It is a very good method but i like this one better... and plan on trying it.

Without a doubt you should do the drawings yourself. This helps conditioning your hand in applying different pressure and your eye/brain to pick up value differences. It takes a little practice to look at objects in terms of values, in the sense he's describing them in the videos.

While there is no such thing as the average person, it does help when drawing faces from memory, or from sight, as you don't always have a perfect grid to lay out on somebody's face. If known how to use properly, it can be a very useful tool. You have to learn to spot differences from the average person, and be able to replicate those in your drawing. When copying an image, a grid would be a much better option, as you can get much more accurate results, but you don't always have a grid.

I had to comment on this after reading [Anyone who takes 7 years to graduate from art school is an r-tard] and obviously Dr. Art School would know that at an elementary level a grid is a practical way to teach you to see measurements and detail BUT nobody we must all be pompous know it all "experts" when someone is trying to share their own knowledge
