I believe your confusing "field" corn with "feed". FIELD corn is the grain type corn- aka dent corn, used for cornmill, grits, hominy, etc. There is also "sweet" corn which is the vegetable type corn- think "corn on the cob" that you buy so cheap in the summer (cause it's in season then). Think about it- would a farmer LIMIT THE MARKET FOR HIS PRODUCT by planting something that could ONLY be used/sold in one venue? Doesn't make sense does it?

I don't know about wheat, but I'm pretty sure feed corn is almost inedible, in regards to human consumption. Its pretty much used for corn syrup and animal feed. Shoot, its almost inedible for the cows too, stomach ulcers and all.

Cracked corn is fine. If they aren't out scratching at the ground they need grit and calcium. Feed store will have ground oyster shells which are good for this. There is "white wheat" IIRC. We've only ever really used soft spring and hard red winter. Good luck! Thanks for watching!

Yes mostly, may I ask white grain (by name) to order to make the "closest thing" to white bread...Is it hard red or...I'm not sure what to ask for (though I know you just told me about the wheat germ being removed and it wont be if I grow it) I just cant figure out what to start with, like most americans I never thought to ask. Chickens typically lay better with "some" grains. I've raised chickens since 94-95 and found this to be true for ME. We store the layer crumbles but also give our chickens grains and legumes that we grow as well as LTS stuff that went bad or the container failed. Don't forget a source of grit if they are penned up. Not sure if I fully understand the question but here goes- "White" bread is made from white flour which is milled wheat where they have taken the germ, bran out (most nutritious parts). Now those parts usually go to animal feed and the remaining is BLEACHED white and sold as white flour. It is so stripped that the FDA MAKES THEM add pack vitamins A and D! I should NOT flatten out- I wouldn't store it in that state. Do you have a grain grinder? If so grind some and see if it "gums" up- sure sign of too much moisture. In general, if you can press your thumbnail into a kernal and NOT have it make a mark, it's dry enough to store. You could also take a small batch to a grain mill and have them test for moisture, protein content, etc.

I looked up milk stage and that's not it. No liquid is coming out. What happens is some kernels literally shatter into dust (or I guess flour, in this case) and others more or less get crushed with a little powder/flour. Some split. Moisture content is very important for long term storage. Rice, beans and such that you buy from the store is going to be just fine for putting up not longer after you purchase them. You don't want to keep ANYTHING sitting around for six months before packing it. As far as yours "flattening out" what precisely does that? There is a stage, called the "milk stage" of wheat where when you press on the kernal it juices- that's NOT where you want to store it at.

Is it really that important. I saw one test that said grains and beans should 'shatter' when you hit them with a hammer. Mine sort of just flatten out. Finally, it isn't rocket science to realize that these couple of cans and buckets are NOT all this family has in storage. Think about it. Food is constantly being used and constantly be replaced- the way it should be done. This wasn't overlooked or forgotten food, this was where they are currently in there rotation cycle. Small amounts of food = quick rotation, larger amounts in storage take more time to rotate. I realize these results conflict with "expert" info but this is REAL EXPERIENCE. SR

OK, let's clarify a few things. 1. No food was "wasted"- we don't waste storage food. We eat storage food on a DAILY basis. Besides people with real long term experience with storage food KNOW that it will not go "poooff" when you open the container. My family is using some of this food now and some of the P.A.W. crew took some of it home also. Nothing was "wasted." 2. No where did anyone say dry ice "didn't work",It was stated that it wasn't advised "for the novice packer."

I also have 1 bag of rice and 1 bag of pinto beans to get started. It is a vacuum sealed bag. If there was a small leak then the vacuum would not hold. Well, that was the big question on the thread talking about food grade versus non-food grade. The consensus was that the non-food grade buckets were made out of a material that could contaminate the food. It was really not about the bucket being clean. There was some discussion about the mylar protecting the food from the bucket but I don't know about that. I just wanted to be safe than sorry.

Please don't take it personally. The one you showed is not a good example. I agree you did not have long enough to mention things like using the inside of the lid as a heliogragh,or that the fishing kit could be used to make light snares etc. Check out British combat survival tins,they are better stocked, and include such items as Beta light, condoms for water storage I could not see any markings on the instructions. Often they come with a guide on how to fold them into a water container

Sorry it was not more beneficial to you. However, 10 minutes is hardly enough time to teach an in depth class on the proper uses of every item in the kit. The purpose of the vid was to simply show you what was in the kit. Looking on a list and seeing the item is different than actually looking at the items, seeing how they were pack and possibly how they might work.

That was such a funny vid. You missed so many uses of the stuff in the kit. These kits were originally developed for the British SAS, only theirs contain many more items, and are much more useful. The best bit for me, was the comment that there was no eraser included..For me that would not be my biggest worry if I was 500 miles from rescue and in a life of death situation.

Just a thought... The electrical tape could come in quite handy, as you point out. Why not take your final recommendation one step farther and *tape* the metal cup to the water bottle? That would give everything you have in the tin, including the tape. Of course, in the bottle is room enough to simply toss a half-roll of tape, so you could go that route, too. Nice video! So, I was thinking about buying a meat grinder, and using that instead to make a dough like substance out of sprouted grains and legumes, I will let you know if it works, just got me a meat grinder and I am currently sprouting some rye. Also got a manual juicer, it is supposed to juice wheatgrass, and any other sort for that matter, plus other veggies and fruits, I am very excited about it, because then I can juice my own sprouts, I mean, I could eat grass, except not, which is very nutritious.

I'm 100% sure that unless its dried completely that it will just gum up the mill. Yes sprouting is a good way to get a lot of nutrients from the grains without waiting for it to grow to maturity.

Got a questions, I have learned about how sprouting grains and legumes adds to their digestibility and nutritional value, would this mill work with slightly moist grain and beans or would I have to dry the sprouts before grinding them? Try it and see what happens and let me know, and also let me know if you have heard about sprouting? If you haven't, I think especially for survival, it could come in real handy. A good book to learn about is Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. Thanks man!

Just to let folks know, if you bake bread that turns out not so well, you can slice it, dry it, and grind it up into bread crumbs (coat chops/chicken, or thicken soups/stews). Really no such thing as a bad loaf of bread...always a way to use it. Remember too, properly dried bread does not mold. ~Garnet

I said it wrong - you keep your keyboard, but you can just change a setting that re-maps the keys. It's one mouse click to flip back and forth. I went to two-handed dvorak after nearly thirty years as a qwerty touch typist when arthritis got me, and it's a much more logical layout with less finger movement. Drives my wife nuts when she gets on my computer, but she's figured out all she has to do is click in the keyboard icon to flip it back to qwerty. But if what you're doing works, rock on!

Bummer about your arm - I hope you had a good attorney and it wasn't a relative's balcony. You're young enough and technology is advancing fast enough that you'll be able to use your arm again. In the meantime, I don't know what your finger mobility is, but you might check out the dvorak one-handed keyboard layouts - no need to change your physical keyboard, it's a software setting, and most operating systems have them already installed. If you can only use one hand, they'll make typing easier.

Good video and tips, I've heard the south has it really bad right now after the hurricanes although the only thing in the news is the financial crisis. The situation doesn't seem too bad though, I don't know if you recall oil crisis in the 70's when (in some places) you could only fill up on odd/even days depending on your license plate numbers and you had to wait 2-3 hours at the pump.

it is the fact that we need to make these changes that is hastening our (the common peoples) demise. how do you take 4 million cars off the road tommorow? easy you nuke 4 million people. we strip the oil from our planet. the very grease it needs. earthquakes will become bigger and more frequent with every barrel we sell. thank you for your video! i share your fear

everyone knows we are killing the planet thats our fault.. if we as people come together to change that is the only way this videos idea will not happen anytime soon... like saving the rain forrests.. thats the lungs of the planet and we chop them down.. if you remove the lungs the body dies.. think about it.. we need to make some big changes

I dont believe in God. everyone dies thats fact, we dont know what happens to us when we do.. fact. our " spirits " could live on and move to another " container " or body.. for all we know so why do we fear death anyway ? its just fear of the un known and you dont know if God exists or not.. you make him up to make it easier to cope with things you dont understand..
