Orca Attack Seal with Waves

In January 2006 while visiting Antarctica, we witnessed a most unusual method for orca to dislodge a crabeater seal from an ice floe - they made large waves to wash the seal off the relative safety of the ice. Later the orca put the seal back on the ice and dislodged the seal a second time which suggested strongly they were training their young.

I also saw this on Animal Planet and it was very impressive. On AP they had an Orca expert analyzing the video telling us exactly what they were doing. It was in fact a strategically planned training exercise for a young Orca, notice how they catch the sea lion and then put it back on the ice so that the young one can do it. You can also see how all of the Orcas were pushing the ice out into the open water for more room to work with. These creatures are so fascinating, I was and still am in awe.

I bet these same people cram meat down their throats and use other animal byproducts without even thinking twice, but then one seal is going to die(which is hardly a snack for 5 Orcas) and they're so sad. I resemble that remark! LOL Poor seal.... but it looks as though the Orcas were practicing 'Catch and Release'. It is the flow of nature. Predator eats the prey.. orcas eat seals, serals eat fish, fish eat smaller fish... it's all tragic and beautiful... but in the end.. all creatures are meat for the beast. The best that can be hoped for is a quick merciful dispatch.

First is try to break the ice, but these ones no, orcas use to hunt alone, these 4 orcas could break the ice easy, but is a training. If this first system dont work they do the "wave". When they put the head out, they are not stalking the seal, they are watching and calculating how to do the attack. This video is amazing, cos u dont only see the hunting, u can see how they train young, and leave the seal alive. If you want to know everything i can explain you more in a message. Bye ;)

Not it doesnt die, they didnt hurt the seal... i saw the video in animal planet and they explain the "whale wave" or "hunting wave". Is a system recorder just 12 times, and this is the most complete video. Experts believe that is just in this family of orcas. This was a training. You can search: whale wave here, theres a video of 2minutes, very short but they explain a little.

Orcas are to the seas are humans are to the land, they are just such beautiful animals. Of course, they are not greedy and materialistic so the do have something on us! But I remember seeing or reading about 1 female Orca that attacked Great White Sharks from below at full speed, literally blowing the shark up, ate the liver and swam off. My problem with the graviton is that it's a theoretical particle. It hasn't been proven, only thought up to explain something. On the other hand, the 2D space time bending seems to be a stretch for explanation as well. The truth seems to be, that we can predict gravity, but don't truly understand why it happens. Sure, we can make up a particle to explain it, but why not just make up a gravity god?

That's an interesting question. I think there's a particle, called a graviton. It would collide with other particles, attracting them towards the source. (They're often mentioned in Sci-Fi such as the Star Trek series, and I talk about it in a story of my own.) But in 2D computer models, you still see the space-time fabric distorted by the mass of stars and stuff. So I guess both theories are to be confirmed.

One question though, is gravity and gravitational waves simply the way space is distorted by mass, or is the gravitational force propagated through a medium, or "gravitational field" much like electromagnetic waves propagate through an electromagnetic field. The patterns do not get strictly more detailed, they just get smaller due to the shorter wavelength (as noted before the spots with salt are the places where these waves cancel each other) if the waves are shorter the distance between these spots is shorter too, so the pattern is smaller, and more of it can be seen on the same plate. My niece has really long hair, it tends to get big and frizzy, so I straighten it for her a few times a week, the rest of the time she basically gells it while wet and wears it up, my question is since her hair is thick and needs to be straightened, with this curling iron have the same effect as a straightener but just curly? Don't want to get picky, but that means they're not tidal waves. That makes it a storm surge. Tidal waves are solitons,you get one with each tide... otherwise known as tidal bores. Like the Pororoca, the Mascaret, the Severn Bore or the Quiantang Silver Dragon. Tidal wave/Bore= caused by tide alone. Storm Surge= caused by storm swel ,usually brought ashore by the tide. Dude.. at least Ghost Reveries is a fantastic album. If you'd really like Opeths former albums you should listen to it more often. It's still 100 % Opeth. But I guess cause you love Agalloch, you are more into Morningrise and My Arms Your Hearse. Give it a try, I can't imagine how a fan of Opeth couldn't like Ghost Reveries. PS: This video is my favorite music video alongside Meshuggahs "Bleed"
