One of the great comedy bits of all time. Wonderful to see it performed, but the timing and delivery on the album is better. Elipolous, I memorized "The Moose" just from listening to the album over and over. I would try to tell the joke to relatives, but I think I enjoyed it more than they did. I like the idea of telling it like Sheldon Leonard. You may recall the Bill Cosby joke where he imitates Sheldon Leonard, the joke about going on a vacation with his wife. "I dove into the water..."

So when people came up to me and asked me what I was up to, or if I had shot or killed anyone I would launch into The Moose routine, doing my best imitation of Sheldon Leonard. Also, in the LP version, the ending is, "Mr. Berkowitz is shot, stuffed and mounted, at the New York Athletic Club. And the joke is on them because it's RESTRICTED." I assume Woody changed "restricted" to "they don't allow Jews", perhaps because the English audiences might not have understood the meaning of "restricted"? If you haven't already done so, check out the LP version of this classic bit. Overall, his delivery is superior in that version & the final joke gets more of a response.

In that version, after he states that he's driving around with two Jewish people on his fender, and that there's a law in New York State, he adds, "Tuesdays, Thursdays & ESPECIALLY Saturdays", which really puts that joke over the top. Not sure why he omitted that one line here.

No, Manhattan is not better, they are both masterpieces in their own right. Don't watch Allen's films from the last 10 years. Watch Manhattan, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Hannah and her Sisters, Bullets over Broadway, these ones are the best. To my opinion. Melinda and Scoop are nothing in his career. Forget you saw them, and watch himat his best. Oh, of course, Love and Death, and then Deconstructing Harry, then Broadway Danny Rose!!! Sorry, got excited. He is my favorite.

Its a matter of preference. Annie Hall has a better romance, but Manhattan establishes a mood and setting better than almost any movie Ive seen. the use of Gershwin's music against NYC in black and white is just breathtaking for the entire film. you may or may not like it better than AH, but the point is you must watch it- now!!

thx for commenting. i actually have never watch this film.. The Woody Allen films that i watched are inorder Melinda and Melinda, Scoop, and Annie Hall. I thought melinda and melinda was ok but i don't see why people has such respect to the director. then i watch scoop which was plainly awful, also woody was just mumbling his lines there. Lastly i watch Annie Hall, cause it is the film every1 in raving about. I was Blown Away on how great Woody Allen really is. Is Manhattan better than Annie

To see videos of Woody Shaw is the most amazing thing for me - I started out listening to him when I was 10 years old and stopped when I was 32...and it only got me on Bob Brookmeyers orchestra (among others)... ;-) Woody is indeed playing a flugelhorn on this recording, and two weeks ago I was lucky to buy even two of these kind of horns (they are extremely rare). Carter sadly died in 1993 after emergency surgery was performed in Poland. I don't know why the surgery was necessary though. He only made one album as a leader called "The Rise of Atlantis" on the Timeless label in 1978.

Update-Woody is doing great! He is a joy & was part of the family from day 1. We renamed him Sonny, Sorry Paul We thought it fit his "sunny" demeanor. He is spunky, loves to play & has tons of energy his favorite game is fetch, throw the ball & he will bring it right back. Sonny is a big time cuddler, loves to snuggle & give kisses. He is very vocal, he & his sister Sassy are very chatty! After we got him life went crazy so we never had a chance to get with Paul for a video update. Maybe soon.

This is not a religious song at all. It's about a man who stood up for the people and told them they have a voice. It's not a republican or Democrat thing either.
