I'm not a builder, so I should probably not even post this but I've always heard the terms "sole plate" and "top plate" instead of the term "base plate". Just an observation. Nice videos. Thank you for making them as I have to hang an exterior door pretty soon.

If you'll type jack stud in google you will find many sites clearly displaying the difference between a jack stud and a cripple. As for the beam/header issue, i've never seen anyone call it a beam. I just think if you want your videos to look professional it's worth the extra distance to check the terms. Never the less a good video, I like most of your comments.

In construction there seems to be alot of ways to say the same thing. In vocational school my teacher always called the jack stud a cripple, just the way I was taught. Please feel free to let me know if the way I say things could be lost through interpretation. Thanks for watching. Bob

Pretty good but the terminology could be better; any stud cut to hold up a header is called a jack stud, not a cripple. No need for an engineer if you have access to a building code book, that all of your city building inspectors have, you'll save some money. And last but not least the beam across the top is a header. Good information, I agree with a lot of it but having proper vocabulary means a lot as well.

I think you are forgetting the main point point here. This video is not intended for people who already know how to hang a door, its for first time do it 'yourselfers'. In fact he has even improved the use and instructions upon what the manufacturers recommend. I don't even know what you mean by trim legs, so your instructions are wasted on the first timer. Great vid.

Well, "conventional" or not, I would be glad to tell you how. Take your trim legs and pin them to the jam in the correct place. Insert the assembly in the door opening and pin the legs to framing keeping the reveal even. Shim behind hinges. 2" nails through jam and shims. The rest is icing on the cake.

Thank you so much! Using the product I was able to hang my first door very easily, and it came out perfect!! However ordering the product from the website, the package only includes 6 brackets. You will need two packages to hang one door Your way. Only putting them on one side was OK for the bathroom, but I will use 12 per door for the bedrooms. (In case kids want to hang from the door frames or something)

thanks bob, I've been working w a seasoned carpenter and it's taken us 2 days to hang 5int. pre hung doors. Is this a standard timeline? Although these doors were 5 1/4 jambs and it was a plaster wall instead of drywall, making it time consuming.

Most exterior doors come with molding on outside of doors but if you install door from outside and put the brackets on inside of door only and bend the flange prior to installation this would work just fine.Some exterior doors are very heavy and you may want to replace one of the top hinge screws with a matching longer screw so as to reach framing for extra reinforcement I believe that would be good===Bob

Bob, I prefer your installation video and installation procedure to the manufacturer's. It looks like their (wall-side) screws are typical drywall screws. Does the hardware remain stable when you have to bang out some of the underlying drywall? I think the manufacturer suggests bashing the hardware in - seems odd. Ok thank you much...I must say in advance I dread this challenge. Ive watched guys lifting toilets they look awkwardly heavy how much does one weigh? One more question; What if I smash the bolts when trying to line up the toilet over them just what if? Is that ok and do I get another chance to try and line it up? A standard wax ring will work be it a thin or thick wax ring depending on the depth of the flange to floor surface.Unless there is something wrong with flange it should not have to be replaced.Most wax rings have toilet bolts in the package already.If the flange is damaged I have a video about a simple repair to a common flange problem that may help.Good Luck===Bob Also just flushing toilet may not be good enough to eliminate water get rubber gloves a sponge and a bucket to remove rest of water

Two things I would add. 1) Warm the wax ring before installation to lessen the chance of it cracking. Stick it in your furnace room or other warm place (80F or so) for 15-20 minutes. 2) Those bolts are designed to snap off at predetermined lengths before you install them. Save's the trouble of sawing.

Never ever wipe the joint when the solder is still hot. wait till the solder cools and hardens to wipe the joint. Other wise the sightly tweek to the joint will cause it to leak. Also, Don't use flux to clean the fittings afterwards. Do you know what the purpose of wiping the joint is? It is to remove the extra flux so it won't corride. So why would you add more?

one thing that he forgot to mention is reeming the pipe. when you cute the copper there will be a lip when you stick your finger in the pipe. take a knife, or a reeming tool and run it around the inside of the pipe to remove the lip until it is smooth. IF YOU DON'T... the water will swirl in the pipe this swirl will eventually lead to deterioration and pinholes in your copper pipe. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO REEM YOUR PIPE. btw...i am a licensed journeyman plumber.

Actually it has more to do with how clean the pipe and fitting are then what kind of solder. If the pipe is clean and nice and shiny (new) it is good to clean it but not necessary. If the pipe is old and dirty it needs to be cleaned.

After u solder runs, if the heat was applied in the right manner, it will run & drip out of the bottom. If it was done properly when the first drop falls the solder joint is full, depending on where you applied the solder & how it runs (gravity). Meaning is it running down both sides of the pipe if it is a horizontal joint. If it is a vertical upsode down joint place you heat a bit higher & on the side away from you. Solder will go towards the heat when u get a drop fall from joint it is full.

Way too much use of flux. Flux is only needed before the heat and only as thin as possible to cover the area where the two surfaces will be soldered and a bit beyond. The less flux you use the cleaner joint you will make. Using flux after you already soldered is not necessary and a waste of flux, makes a mess, and if not properly cleaned afterward will promote corrosion of the pipe making it fail prematurelly. You don't need much flux because when it heats it will bubble and expand anyway.

12x12 is a little large for this type patch.I would advise cutting stud to stud like I do in my "UNIQUE USE FOR SAWZALL"video.Also once completely dry, rescrew surrounding area to make sure drywall did not sag away from floor joist.Prime with stain kill paint before final coat. Hello Bob, water overflowing from my bathroom upstairs caused some water to come through my celing downstairs. Never broke through but there is a stain there about 1foot by 1 foot that feels slightly moist. Will these instructions also work with this spot in my celing?

A typical railing bracket mounts into a wall stud if you can remove it and place it on the closest wall stud that would be best.If that cannot be done then I would cut the patch from stud to stud and nail a 2x4 between for an anchoring point.Hope this helps===Bob

Hi. I have a hole about the same size in your video, but behind it is where a section of stair railing mounts to the drywall. If I patch the hole as you did in the video, will it be strong enough to drill in to and accept the weight of the railing again? The railing is about 8 feet, and mounts to the wall in in 3 places (top, middle, bottom). Thanks for your help!

Home Depot should have everything you need.Mud is actually drywall topping .Cost for a six inch mudding knife you can expect to pay 5/6 dollars razor Knife 3/4 dollars small amount drywall and topping compound 7/8 dollars.This should be enough to do several small repairs as described in video.Hope this helped===Bob

ok im a serious novice in this area, caused some holes at home and i needa fix em. 1st question, can i get all these materials at any hardware store? like home depot or something? 2nd question- when you say mud, is that something you can buy as well at the store? dry wall as well. 3rd- can i get a ballpark figure as to how much it'll cost? thanks a lot

Great info I have done alot of personal work on my homes and I had patched up a couple of holes made from doorknobs and I had never thought doing the repair like that. That is great, no tape and no screws. Cant wait to try it out some day. Thanks

If your wondering why the finished patch looks different than the rest of the wall, don't forget to sand smooth and then texture. Best way to texture a small hole like this is with the cans of texture spray you can buy at the hardware store. Practice on a side piece before using it on the wall so you can get a match. When dry don't forget to prime before you paint. Good Luck
