Talkies weren't invented for some time after he started film making. During City Lights was when talkies became mainstream but he stuck with silent films because that's what he preferred and felt that a good story could be told with body language rather than actual words.

The gamin wrote the words on his cuffs so he could still sing without memorizing the words. During his opening dance, his cuffs flew off so he had to improvise. This movie was made about 10 years after adding voice to film was possible. Charlie Chaplin resisted voice in film because he had major fans in every country. Translating text is easy, but dubbing is expensive. Gibberish doesn't need to be translated, so he did use voice.

Sólo algunas partes tienen sonido, como la que canta o algunos efectos, como aplausos, etc. El estaba en contra del cine sonoro y quiso demostrar con esto, que no se necesitaban de las palabras para hacer reír. Lo hizo al cantar algo en "ningún idioma"
