Mesquite is a hard wood, but have you ever worked with ipe otherwise known as ironwood? It is the most relentless, dense lumber in the world. The only wood with the same fire rating as concrete and weighs (i believe) 66 lbs. per cubic foot. That's heavier than water so it sinks. I use it to make tools for shaping metal. Beautiful work and concept! enjoyed the vid! ED

Great work if you ask me. If you don't appreciate this then you've never tried your hand at woodworking. Plus I like the juxtaposition of wholly man-made items with natural wood.

Actually, you're right. But I do think negative commenting should be accepted as long as it's not hateful.
By: troll39261. on 20 May 08, 21:39:57
The ideas of "juxtaposing" materials and "pairing" subject matter is boring to me because a considerable amount of artists have been using these concepts for around twenty years. To say Claude Monet painted "the mundane" would be a pretty uncharacteristic description. I understand what you are trying to articulate, but your metaphor sucks. You attacked me for not liking this crap, so I don't think it's particularly "odd" for me to return the same sentiment. "Childish" would be a better word.

His work is awesome. Get a life "TROLL" (title fits)
By: mrsaluki. on 20 May 08, 19:17:38
The comment about Monet was not meant to say that this guy is like Monet. I meant that disliking his work because it focuses on the mundane is like disliking other artist's work because they use mundane subjects. I disagree with you about the impact of the concept this guy is using. I think it's especially interesting because the species of wood he is using is not typically used in furniture making or other high-end wood craft. Also seems a bit odd to attack others for liking art you hate.

HAHA WHO IS THE FOOL NOW! LEARN 2 POST.
By: troll39261. on 20 May 08, 18:33:37
And furthermore, I would really love to understand how you came to compare this guy with Monet. That's a fairly unsubstantiated correlation.
By: troll39261. on 20 May 08, 18:26:41
Well, Monet was an impressionist so his work was more about how we interpret light and color than it was about "always painting flowers". To me, making "man-made" objects out of wood, conceptually, is not exactly the most innovatory idea and it really doesn't stimulate me. It is impressive that he actually spends all the time to harness such a craft, but I think craft is secondary to concept. I never said it wasn't art, I just implied you're an idiot if you like it.

(The "Fool" comment was in response to troll39261. The way this comment board works is goofy!)

By: mrsaluki. on 20 May 08, 17:00:33
Nice move with that whole lack of vision thing Troll. That's a bit like asking why Monet was always painting flowers. Maybe he could have made more money making wall paper. If you can't see that this is art then nobody will ever be able to explain it to you.

Cool!
By: troll39261. on 20 May 08, 05:02:57
Okay so he makes man-made objects out of wood. If he builds his entire body of work around an idea that simple he could easily show his work at craft fairs and hobby stores. But shit, if youtube likes it - it MUST be good, right?
